This settles the debate over organic foods.
Are organic foods really healthier than non-organic foods? Researchers from Newcastle University in England have reviewed and conducted meta-analysis on 343 peer-reviewed scientific studies in an effort to find out if organic foods contained greater nutritional value than conventional foods. The results will probably shock some, but will confirm what many people already knew; organic foods are indeed much healthier for human consumption than ‘conventional’ foods. Image credit: USDA
The study looked at existing research that had been conducted on the differences between organic and conventional foods, finding that there were some significant variations in the nutritional value between the two.

Francis Chaboussou era agrónomo en el Instituto Nacional Francés de Investigación Agrícola. Ha dejado un legado que está transformando como pensamos sobre insectos y agricultura. Sus estudios e investigaciones los realizó en un arco de 50 años. Su libro “Cosechas Sanas: una nueva revolución agrícola” tiene por objetivo explicar las razones que explican el fracaso de fungicidas, insecticidas y especialmente, herbicidas.

Everyone wants to contribute a smaller carbon footprint, but it’s quite difficult when 80% of stock sold in supermarkets is wrapped in toxic packaging. In effect, Americans still produce near 3 pounds of trash every day, and this is a big problem. So what could be an intelligent solution? How about a zero-waste grocery store that utilizes no waste materials.
To eliminate food-packaging waste before it even gets into the shopping cart is the idea behind Original Unvertpackt, a new concept supermarket in Germany that takes things into zero-waste territory by encouraging consumers to tote reusable containers to the store.
Nothing that comes in a disposable box, bag, jar, or other container is sold at this store. And instead of shelf after shelf of boxed items, this supermarket utilizes bulk bins, attractively displayed produce that’s not shrink wrapped or stored in tetra packs, and beverage stations for refillable water bottles.
Such a store is the brainchild of Sara Wolf and Milena Glimbovski, two Germany-based social impact innovators. On the project’s website, they wrote that they want consumers to have a choice about how much food they buy, as well as how much waste it creates. And it’s clear that German shoppers want what Original Unvertpackt has to offer, too!
Although a large part of the effort has been financed by private investors, the project’s team took up crowd-funding to raise the final $61,000 it needed to launch in Berlin. In three weeks, they smashed the target goal, raising about $124,000.
The video above is in German, but it’s pretty easy to follow along and check out the concept in action. Wolf and Glimbovski say that although they’re not “big players” in the food industry,” they want to show the grocery conglomerates that there’s a more eco-friendly way to sell food.
While zero-waste supermarkets may not be so easily be implemented in America (most citizens barely remember to bring their recyclable bags to the store), such change is obviously needed and completely possible. As the creators noted on their website, this generation has “littered the world,” so maybe the next one has a chance to make it better.

The FAO experts draw a parallel between the decline of the indigenous tribes living space, globalization and the decline of biodiversity of food.

The fifth Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report is due out on September 27th, and is expected to reaffirm with growing confidence that humans are driving global warming and climate change. In anticipation of the widespread news coverage of this auspicious report, climate contrarians appear to be in damage control mode, trying to build up skeptical spin in media climate stories. Ending Ecocide
“If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear,”
George Orwell wrote as a preface to his novel, Animal Farm.
This is particularly true of the idea to make ecocide a crime which has been around since the 1950s. Ecocide was almost included as one of the international Crimes Against Peace alongside Genocide but dropped at the eleventh hour – probably due to the opposition of some governments. The only reference which remained inside the Crimes Against Peace is the mentioning of “widespread, long-term and severe damage to the natural environment” as a War Crime (Rome Statute, Art 8, 2 b, iv) – creating the absurd situation that ecocide is nowadays a crime in war time but not during peace. We believe this must change and the below history illustrates that ecocide has been discussed by the academia as well as the relevant UN committees – all it needs is political will and a citizens movement to make it happen.

As we’ve written before, the mysterious mass die-off of honey bees that pollinate $30 billion worth of crops in the US has so decimated America’s apis mellifera population that one bad winter could leave fields fallow. Now, a new study has pinpointed some of the probable causes of bee deaths and the rather scary results show that averting beemageddon will be much more difficult than previously thought.
Scientists had struggled to find the trigger for so-called Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) that has wiped out an estimated 10 million beehives, worth $2 billion, over the past six years. Suspects have included pesticides, disease-bearing parasites and poor nutrition. But in a first-of-its-kind study published today in the journal PLOS ONE, scientists at the University of Maryland and the US Department of Agriculture have identified a witch’s brew of pesticides and fungicides contaminating pollen that bees collect to feed their hives.

Los incendios originados por los rayos, unos 700 al año, se considera “una de las causas más peligrosas”, ya que se producen en sitios frecuentemente inaccesibles para los servicios de extinción y son de difícil detección, motivo por el cual, muchos de los incendios provocados por rayos se convierten en grandes incendios (aquellos en los que arden más de 500 hectáreas).
El Mal uso del fuego
Una de las motivaciones que inducen al mal uso del fuego es, según una estadística publicada en un informe de 2003, que abarca 5.049 incendios de los 9.922 registrados en ese año, fue “eliminar matorral o residuos”, que causó el 47,32% de los incendios.
También la práctica de pastores y ganaderos de quemar la vegetación para “regenerar pastos” fue causa del 24,06 por ciento de los fuegos; mientras que los pirómanos ocasionaron el 11,90 por ciento de los incendios.
Vandalismos (2,08%), cazadores para facilitar la caza (2,67%), para ahuyentar animales (1,34%) y venganzas (1,45%) fueron causas de incendio en aquel año. De estos datos, los autores del informe concluyen que “seguimos sin saber los motivos de casi la mitad de los incendios forestales” que se producen en España (49,11%), lo cual favorece “la aparición recurrente de falsas alarmas sobre la alta intencionalidad de especuladores del suelo, desaprensivos con intereses económicos, mercado de la madera, etc, que no han podido demostrarse más que en contadas ocasiones”.

Un artículo publicado en ABC.es da buena cuenta de cómo ha afectado a la vegetación el accidente de Fukushima en el área de la central.
Tomates con forma de tumor, lechugas gigantescas, melocotones siameses, berenjenas fusionadas… Casi dos años y medio después del devastador terremoto y posterior tsunami que arrasaron la costa japonesa, causaron cerca de 15.000 muertos y dañaron gravemente la central nuclear de Fukushima Daiichi, siguen registrándose nuevos y preocupantes efectos derivados del accidente nuclear más grave desde el desastre de la central nuclear de Chernobyl, en 1986.

Cada cierto tiempo aparecen estudios que asocian enfermedades con los pesticidas. Pero el ciudadano medio, caso de que llegue a enterarse, no tiene elementos para juzgar si ésos estudios justifican realmente una alarma.
La voz de alerta deberían darla las autoridades sanitarias, pero a nadie escapa que dichas autoridades suelen ser muy cautelosas cuando hay que adoptar medidas que pueden afectar a intereses económicos de poderosas multinacionales químicas.
Por eso el que una autoridad de un país del nivel de investigación médica de Francia haya publicado recientemente un informe sobre un tema tan escabroso como el de “Pesticidas y salud” en el que se alerta seriamente sobre una serie de hechos, es algo que debería ser tenido muy en cuenta, no solo en Francia, obviamente, sino en otros muchos países que, como España, por ejemplo, no brillan precisamente por su diligencia en estas cuestiones.

Hoy en día, cuando pensamos en la guerra, nuestra mente se torna hacia Iraq y Afganistán. Pero la guerra más grande es la guerra contra el planeta. Ésta tiene sus raíces en una economía que no respeta límites ecológicos y éticos – límites a la desigualdad, límites a la injusticia, límites a la codicia y la concentración económica.
Un puñado de empresas y de potencias busca controlar los recursos de la Tierra y transformar el planeta en un supermercado en el que todo está en venta. Quieren vender nuestro agua, genes, células, órganos, conocimientos, culturas y nuestro futuro.
La guerras duraderas en Afganistán, Iraq y las que les han seguido no son sólo sangre por petróleo. A medida que ellas se desarrollan, vemos que son sangre por alimentos, sangre por genes y biodiversidad y sangre por agua.
La metalidad guerrera subyacente a la agricultura bélico-industrial es obvia en los nombres de los herbicidas de Monsanto— Round-Up, Machete, Lasso. American Home Products, que se ha fusionado con Monsanto, da a sus herbicidas nombre igualmente agresivos, incluyendo “Pentagon” y “Squadron”. Es la lengua de la guerra. La sustentabilidad se basa en la paz con la Tierra.
La guerra contra la Tierra comienza en la mente. Los pensamientos violentos dan forma a acciones violentas. Categorías violentas construyen herramientas violentas. Y en ninguna parte esto es tan vivaz como en las metáforas y métodos en los que se basa la producción industrial, agrícola y alimentaria. La fábricas que produjeron venenos y explosivos para matar a la gente durante las guerras han sido transformadas en fábricas productoras de agroquímicos al terminar las guerras.

Oggi il “mercato” della salute è il settore economico che “tira” di più in assoluto e sul quale è concentrata la maggiore attenzione della politica e delle relative fameliche lobby economiche. Non a caso il 90% dei bilanci delle regioni italiane viene inghiottito dagli onnipotenti “mercanti della salute” e nonostante questo enorme “cannibalismo economico” che dovrebbe far si che non ci sia più un solo malato, in compenso tutte le regioni hanno degli enormi “buchi” di bilancio, sono “economicamente e profondamente malate” e se fossero mai delle aziende private sarebbero già chiuse da tempo. Quindi la salute degli italiani è un bel tavolo imbandito per i portafogli delle multinazionali, svenduta dalla politica.
L’intelligentissimo uomo moderno dovrebbe comprendere che la salute non si compra in farmacia!
