Premessa: agricoltura e la Dottrina sociale della Chiesa
Bisogna riconoscere che, in questi ultimi anni, la dottrina sociale della Chiesa (=DSC), specie mediante il Compendio, l’enciclica Caritas in veritate (=CIV) di Benedetto XVI, i Messaggi per la Giornata mondiale della pace come quello intitolato Se vuoi coltivare la pace, custodisci il creato (1 gennaio 2010), ma anche mediante i suoi soggetti, singoli e collettivi – persone, comunità ecclesiali, organismi pastorali, istituti culturali, associazioni, movimenti ed organizzazioni laicali cattolici o di ispirazione cristiana, non esclusa la Coldiretti -, con tutte le loro iniziative culturali e le buone pratiche, ha contribuito a tenere viva una percezione positiva ed alta del ruolo dell’agricoltura rispetto al bene comune delle Nazioni e della famiglia umana.

BREAKING NEWS: Three-quarters of the genetic diversity in agriculture have disappeared during the twentieth century, according to a study released Sept. 7 by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The FAO experts draw a parallel between the decline of the indigenous tribes living space, globalization and the decline of biodiversity of food.

Ending Ecocide
“If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear,”
George Orwell wrote as a preface to his novel, Animal Farm.
This is particularly true of the idea to make ecocide a crime which has been around since the 1950s. Ecocide was almost included as one of the international Crimes Against Peace alongside Genocide but dropped at the eleventh hour – probably due to the opposition of some governments. The only reference which remained inside the Crimes Against Peace is the mentioning of “widespread, long-term and severe damage to the natural environment” as a War Crime (Rome Statute, Art 8, 2 b, iv) – creating the absurd situation that ecocide is nowadays a crime in war time but not during peace. We believe this must change and the below history illustrates that ecocide has been discussed by the academia as well as the relevant UN committees – all it needs is political will and a citizens movement to make it happen.

As we’ve written before, the mysterious mass die-off of honey bees that pollinate $30 billion worth of crops in the US has so decimated America’s apis mellifera population that one bad winter could leave fields fallow. Now, a new study has pinpointed some of the probable causes of bee deaths and the rather scary results show that averting beemageddon will be much more difficult than previously thought.
Scientists had struggled to find the trigger for so-called Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) that has wiped out an estimated 10 million beehives, worth $2 billion, over the past six years. Suspects have included pesticides, disease-bearing parasites and poor nutrition. But in a first-of-its-kind study published today in the journal PLOS ONE, scientists at the University of Maryland and the US Department of Agriculture have identified a witch’s brew of pesticides and fungicides contaminating pollen that bees collect to feed their hives.

Life affirming law
Money is a tool for good or for destruction, and likewise law can be life affirming or life destroying. It just depends on where you align it. At the moment it is the law for a company to put its shareholders’ interests first, which means to maximise profits. So it doesn’t matter if you’ve someone in the boardroom saying ‘I’m not really keen that we’re causing mass damage and destruction to the Alberta tar sands’ if they’re told by the corporate lawyer sitting there, ‘tough, quite frankly your number one duty is to maximise your profits’. That’s how the law of ecocide comes into its own. It will shift those priorities. It will say first and foremost do no harm, and then make profits. That’s the key driver here.

Cada cierto tiempo aparecen estudios que asocian enfermedades con los pesticidas. Pero el ciudadano medio, caso de que llegue a enterarse, no tiene elementos para juzgar si ésos estudios justifican realmente una alarma.
La voz de alerta deberían darla las autoridades sanitarias, pero a nadie escapa que dichas autoridades suelen ser muy cautelosas cuando hay que adoptar medidas que pueden afectar a intereses económicos de poderosas multinacionales químicas.
Por eso el que una autoridad de un país del nivel de investigación médica de Francia haya publicado recientemente un informe sobre un tema tan escabroso como el de “Pesticidas y salud” en el que se alerta seriamente sobre una serie de hechos, es algo que debería ser tenido muy en cuenta, no solo en Francia, obviamente, sino en otros muchos países que, como España, por ejemplo, no brillan precisamente por su diligencia en estas cuestiones.

Hoy en día, cuando pensamos en la guerra, nuestra mente se torna hacia Iraq y Afganistán. Pero la guerra más grande es la guerra contra el planeta. Ésta tiene sus raíces en una economía que no respeta límites ecológicos y éticos – límites a la desigualdad, límites a la injusticia, límites a la codicia y la concentración económica.
Un puñado de empresas y de potencias busca controlar los recursos de la Tierra y transformar el planeta en un supermercado en el que todo está en venta. Quieren vender nuestro agua, genes, células, órganos, conocimientos, culturas y nuestro futuro.
La guerras duraderas en Afganistán, Iraq y las que les han seguido no son sólo sangre por petróleo. A medida que ellas se desarrollan, vemos que son sangre por alimentos, sangre por genes y biodiversidad y sangre por agua.
La metalidad guerrera subyacente a la agricultura bélico-industrial es obvia en los nombres de los herbicidas de Monsanto— Round-Up, Machete, Lasso. American Home Products, que se ha fusionado con Monsanto, da a sus herbicidas nombre igualmente agresivos, incluyendo “Pentagon” y “Squadron”. Es la lengua de la guerra. La sustentabilidad se basa en la paz con la Tierra.
La guerra contra la Tierra comienza en la mente. Los pensamientos violentos dan forma a acciones violentas. Categorías violentas construyen herramientas violentas. Y en ninguna parte esto es tan vivaz como en las metáforas y métodos en los que se basa la producción industrial, agrícola y alimentaria. La fábricas que produjeron venenos y explosivos para matar a la gente durante las guerras han sido transformadas en fábricas productoras de agroquímicos al terminar las guerras.

If Nature Had Rights
IT WAS THE SUDDEN RUSH of the goats’ bodies against the side of the boma that woke him. Picking up a spear and stick, the Kenyan farmer slipped out into the warm night and crept toward the pen. All he could see was the spotted, sloping hindquarters of the animal trying to force itself between the poles to get at the goats—but it was enough. He drove his spear deep into the hyena.
The elders who gathered under the meeting tree to deliberate on the matter were clearly unhappy with the farmer’s explanation. A man appointed by the traditional court to represent the interests of the hyena had testified that his careful examination of the body had revealed that the deceased was a female who was still suckling pups. He argued that given the prevailing drought and the hyena’s need to nourish her young, her behavior in attempting to scavenge food from human settlements was reasonable and that it was wrong to have killed her. The elders then cross-examined the farmer carefully. Did he appreciate, they asked, that such killings were contrary to customary law? Had he considered the hyena’s situation and whether or not she had caused harm? Could he not have simply driven her away? Eventually the elders ordered the man’s clan to pay compensation for the harm done by driving more than one hundred of their goats (a fortune in that community) into the bush, where they could be eaten by the hyenas and other wild carnivores.

¿Puede la agricultura ecológica alimentar al mundo?

Esta es la gran cuestión que desde hace ya algunos años se plantean tanto aquellos que la defienden como aquellos que la menosprecian. La respuesta no es sencilla. En los últimos años se han publicado diversos estudios científicos que tratan de predecir esta posibilidad. Algunos llegan a la conclusión que sí y otros llegan a la conclusión contraria. Mi opinión es que no podremos tener la certeza absoluta hasta que lo llevemos a cabo.
Pero ¿y si planteamos la pregunta al revés? ¿Puede la agricultura industrial alimentar al mundo? Está visto que no. Ya llevan unos cuantos años intentándolo y las cifras de pobreza no paran de aumentar.

Le volpi artiche, (Vulpes lagopus) quei piccoli carnivori dalla maestosa pelliccia bianca che li protegge dagli inverni gelidi del nord, non sono però protette dal cibo che mangiano, e dal veleno che contiene. Le popolazioni costiere pescano infatti dall’oceano il proprio nutrimento, e il tasso di mercurio nell’oceano è troppo alto, soprattutto a quelle latitudini. Ed estremamente pericoloso, non solo per le volpi: il mercurio è dannosissimo anche per noi.

Nuovo studio americano (!): il mais ogm conterrebbe sostanze tossiche per la salute
Uno studio condotto dalla societa’ statunitense Profit Pro, specializzata nella produzione di mais, indica che le piante ogm conterrebbero elementi chimici assenti nelle piante naturali e potenzialmente pericolose per la salute. Il nuovo rapporto intitolato “2012 Com Comparison”, pubblicato a marzo dall’americana Profit Pro, sostiene che le piante di mais geneticamente modificate conterrebbero alcuni elementi potenzialmente tossici normalmente assenti nelle piante naturali. Tra questi elementi, l’americana cita in particolare cloruri, formaldeide e glifosato. L’evidenza scientifica sugli effetti cumulative del glifosato evidenzia seri problem sanitari come carcinogenesi, alterazioni endocrine, danni al DNA, tossicità a carico del sistema neuronale o di fegato e reni anche al disotto dei limiti consigliati per l’agricoltura, come sottolinea la D.ssa Mae-Wan Ho.
Numerose sono le differenze riscontrate nello studio comparativo tra le piante geneticamente modificate e le varietà convenzionali poiché i benefici nutrizionali del mais naturale andrebbero persi dopo che la pianta e’ stata ingegnerizzata: le piante non-transgeniche testate contenevano 437 volte piu’ calcio, 56 volte piu’ magnesio e 7 volte piu’ manganese delle piante gm.”Questo prova che l’affermazione secondo cui non c’e’ alcuna differenza tra il mais ogm e il mai non-ogm e’ falsa”, spiega Zen Honeycutt.
Il rapporto arriva poco dopo la firma del presidente Obama a un disegno di legge noto sotto il nomignolo “Monsanto Protection Act” che contiene una disposizione che protegge da ogni controversia le aziende agro biotecnologiche, quali la Monsanto.
